Spark Of Madness

"You're only given a little spark of madness, you musn't lose it" Robin Williams

We had once a unique dinner and we got to discuss about uniqueness. My flat mate opined that with genetic engineering, uniqueness will have a lesser meaning. Parents can easily create their desired child with the availability of options and means. Think of Filipino parents having a child with green eyes, stands seven-foot tall with blonde hair. Is it madness? Or freedom?

I remember a friend who save the egg york of a sunny side up for last. Another one, drinking coffee while inside the bathroom depositing. I, for instance cannot keep off my eyes from tv including commercial, even when my mouth is full eating. Is it madness because it's unique or because only them who could do that and we would not?

Which leads me to more questions. What makes a person unique? Is it defined by one's individuality or independence from commonality?

Nature and Uniqueness

Among the species on earth, only human has inherited the reptilian trait of aggression, ritual, territoriality, and social hierarchy deposited in the small portion of the brain called R-complex, and the limbic system or mammalian brain that is the seed of mood, emotions, concern and care for the young . The point of distinction of human from other living species is the cerebral cortex comprises the 2/3 of the brain. It is where analysis and criticial thinking (left hemisphere) and creativity, sensitivity and pattern recognition (right hemisphere) are located. These two working together preside our emotions triggered by biased to care for our young and our basic instinct of survival through dominance and aggression. With this part of the brain, we are conscious of our existence and other living things' prevalence. The biological and mental evolution of mankind precedes our ability to take advantage of our characteristics and traits in gaining the nature of our individuality.

Nurture and Uniqueness

Summing the characteristics, qualities and personal history defines a specific individual and distinguish him from the rest of mankind. Our uniqueness is nurtured by our experience teaching us lessons of adaptation and flexibility.
